DANstudio Revives Hanoi Townhouse Using ‘Green Balconies’
Intuitive Design Foregrounds Natural Ventilation And Lighting
Transforming an outdated townhouse on the outskirts of Hanoi into a modern self-sufficient space is no easy task. But DANstudio nailed it and they did so with functional finesse.
The project’s biggest puzzle was how to bring the building more light and ventilation without making major structural changes. In response, DANstudio created a new facade with ‘green balconies’ on the exterior — a series of aluminum slats to hold outdoor shelving for plants.
The team also cut holes in the floors and replaced concrete walls with wooden slatted semi-transparent screens. This helped to naturally filter light while increasing airflow throughout all four stories.
As Vietnam’s architectural industry rapidly evolves, this is just one of many current projects, such as the Zen House and the 7 X 7 House, that’s approaching home design in a beautifully unprecedented way.
