INSTA ELITE @ANNIENGUYEN
Inspired By Connection
Saying you’re an art director/designer living in Los Angeles is one thing, actually doing it is another. Annie Nguyen (@annienguyen) is in the second group; an art director and designer living and working in Los Angeles, California. Focused on interiors, objects and fashion, she says, “I focus on brand building and identity, design and strategy through graphics, photography and most recently, film.”
Looking at her feed, a monochromatic palette features heavily, juxtaposed with the occasional glimpse of the ocean, or another element of nature which she loves. Not one to over complicate life, Annie keeps her aesthetic simple, mostly using the natural available light to throw mood into her subjects. Check out our Q & A with Annie below:
How would you describe your Instagram feed?
It’s minimal and contrasting. I play with whites, blacks and greys. I like to use shadow and light to add drama to my subject. Every now and then, there’s a hint of color, thought it’s very rare!
How did you start? What was your inspiration?
I moved into an apartment three years ago that allowed more natural light in. I couldn’t resist taking pictures! From there, it just grew into a daily routine that became a more serious hobby.
Black and white are the two dominant colours on your feed. What about in real life? Do you surround yourself with other colours?
It’s funny because the answer to that is not really. My apartment is furnished with grey, white, navy and black. My wardrobe is pretty neutral as well. It’s not that I’m opposed to color, I do work pieces of blush pink, beige, khaki green and blues into my life but it’s rare. I like the uniformity and ease that a simple color palette brings.
How much planning does it take when it comes to your Instagram?
It depends on my mood. Sometimes I’ll just plan one shot. Other times I’ll plan the shot I want to post plus the shots to follow. It also depends on how much time I have!
What do you hope viewers get from looking at your Instagram?
I hope they find some appreciation for it and enjoy what I choose to share. I hope that it’s something relatable. I’m a pretty emotional person and my Instagram is a place I post some thoughts, questions and personal experiences.
Some people use social media for inspiration, while others use it to inspire. What’s your stance?
I use it to connect. I’ve met so many people through social media. I want to connect with more people, to collaborate and to do more work. I constantly want to progress and grow and I think social media allows for unlimited possibilities in that realm.
What is the most memorable shot in your feed?
Oh! This is tough. I don’t know if I have a most memorable but here’s one I took recently on the beach.
What do you think about the new Instagram Stories feature? How different do you use it compared to the usual feed?
I really like it! I’m not a Snapchat user so to view instant videos like that all within one app is much more convenient for me. I also like that you can tag people in it. I actually use it quite a bit. It’s a great way to share quickly without thinking so hard on a post. It also lets people know you’re alive still despite not posting so frequently! (Which I am guilty of all the time!)
