Insta Elite @iamviettran
UK-born Viet Tran making it in London
Currently rubbing shoulders with fashion’s biggest names as a designer and illustrator at ELLE UK magazine, Viet Tran @iamviettran compiles his feed based on simplicity; “I find that the most uncomplicated things are the most beautiful” he told us when we spoke. Resembling a mosaic mood board heavy on studies in fashion, nature and his everyday life with friends in the UK, he does have to think ‘one or two posts in advance’ to maintain it’s look. Also featured are some of the covers of the magazine he works for, and some priceless glimpses behind the scenes of what it’s like to work for one of the biggest brands in fashion. Envy.
Thanks for the insta love Viet. Catch you on your next visit to Vietnam!
How would you define your aesthetic?
Simple, I would say. I find that the most uncomplicated things are the most beautiful.
How did you get into the habit of taking photos and posting on Instagram?
I think it’s very normal for someone who is creative or works in a creative and visual industry to want to project his or her aesthetic through a platform like Instagram. I enjoy photography and for a long time I had posted very normal things and over the past year it has become something more designed and considered.
What makes a great Instagram feed in your opinion?
For me a great Instagram feed has consistency and has a particular style in the way that it is edited and/or displayed. That said, some of my favourite Instagram accounts are very silly meme accounts!
How much planning do you have to do in order to create the modular effect for your Instagram feed?
I suppose it does take a bit of planning because what I want my feed to have is pace and balance. It really doesn’t take very long but I do think about it a few posts in advance.
What is the most memorable snapshot in your entire feed?
This shot – and all the photographs I took from my first ever trip to Vietnam, where my family are from. It was one of the most beautiful and important experiences of my life so far.
How important is Instagram to your work?
Well I manage and edit the ELLE UK (@elleuk) account so I guess you could say it is quite important as deciding the flow, pace and visual style on a daily basis is no easy task. In terms of my personal account, I guess in a way it forms a sort of portfolio of my visual style and would be the first impression people are able to gain of me.
What do you think about the new Instagram Stories feature? How different do you use it compared to the usual feed?
I love it! Sometimes I think my feed makes me look like I take things too seriously or I’m too considered, but it’s just part of what I do/like, so in that sense I use Instagram Stories for sillier things. And it disappears after 24 hours which is great!
Which program(s) or apps do you usually use to edit your photos?
VSCO and Photoshop. But I try not to edit too much as it can start to look too“filtered”.
What are some of your favorite Instagram to follow?
@starecasers – a couple who run a beautiful menswear blog, a really beautiful and sophisticated balance of fashion and lifestyle.
@mansurgavriel – this American brand has the best visual style. I love it. Photographs are taken by the mega talented Posternak twin sisters- very inspiring.
@medievalreacts – modern memes meets medieval paintings. Very silly, very funny.
