Photo: Firewalking in Ha Giang Province
Hanoi based Binh Duong’s Image Makes Smithsonian Travel Photo Finals
An image of the little-known practice of fire-walking by a small ethnic minority group called the Pa Then in northern Ha Giang, taken by photographer Binh Duong, has been selected by the editors of the Smithsonian for the publication’s annual photo contest. Among a list of ten chosen in the travel category, the image was selected from around 48,000 submissions in total from 146 countries. For the record, the practice takes place annually to wish prosperity for the new year.
The other ten finalists include entries from Spain, Indonesia, China, Bangladesh and India. You can vote for the Reader’s Choice award here. The Smithsonian’s annual photo contest has been running for thirteen years now and is estimated to have attracted over 350,000 images in that time.
