‘Saigon, I Love You’ Takes Best Picture At Golden Kites
First time director Ly Minh Thang takes out Vietnam’s top film award
Beginners luck? Maybe. On his directorial debut, up and coming director Ly Minh Thang has taken out the top prize at Vietnam’s Golden Kite Awards, the local industry’s version of the Oscars, for romantic-comedy ‘Saigon, I Love You.’ Held yesterday at the Ho Chi Minh Military Theater in Tan Binh District, 19 locally produced films were honored at the annual celebration of the best in film, television and documentaries from 2016.
Telling the often dramatic but frequently comic story of intertwined love in the southern metropolis, ‘Saigon, I Love You’ actor Huynh Lap took out the award for Best Supporting Actor for his portrayal of an LGBT son of a single mother. ‘Zodiac 12: Five Steps of Love’ and ‘Tam Cam: The Untold’ both took home Silver Kites, presented to the runners up in each category.
Other names to be recognised included Ha Hien, who won Best Actor for his role as a troubled young man coming to terms with his past in the dramatic film ‘Sut’, and Vu Phuong Anh (Jun Vu), who won Best Actress for her role in ‘Zodiac 12.’
The cream of the local industry were all in attendance. Check out the gallery below:
