Watch: Vietnam - ‘Land of the Dragon’
South African Time Lapse Artist Produces Stunning Vid
If you’ve been away over Tet filling your hard drive with pics of lands afar, Top South African time-lapse artist Rory Allen has produced a stunning video to remind us of the beauty right under our noses.
After spending nearly three weeks in Vietnam with his girlfriend in September and October last year, his two minute video includes vision from Ho Chi Minh City, Phu Quoc Island and a road trip from Hanoi to Hoi An including stops in Hue and Da Nang.
“Vietnam is visually and culturally mind-blowing,” said Rory. “It’s also a relatively cheap place to travel in when you have rands as your base currency.”
For Rory the number of scooters on the road was a highlight. “The time-lapses in the video will give you some idea, but it’s hard to explain how many scooters there are constantly driving around. It’s an experience, especially if you rent your own. Our highlight was being caught on one in heavy rain and a lightning storm!”
His trip wasn’t without challenges, from being “pretty much evacuated from Cát Bà island due to a monsoon” to “constantly negotiating the cost of everything.”
Nice work Rory! For the record, the video was shot on a Canon 5D MK3 and a compact Sony RX100 he bought in Vietnam, before being edited in Cape Town by Wagtale and sound-tracked by Pressure Cooker Studios.
