peddle thorp architects: fluid - amphibian pavilion

'fluid' - the amphibian pavilion
peddle thorpe architects'(PTA) submission for the thematic pavilion of the world expo 2012
in yeosu, korea is resolved as a vessel - a floating exhibition space that can be sailed to other cities.
it represents an evolution of architecture - a futuristic adaptable living building that can adjust to
the unknowable future, encouraging multidisciplinary problem solving through sustainable solutions.
the overall concept presents a schematic design which is alive, adaptive and reactive
to its oceanic environments. anchored to the coastline as if a living organism, rising and falling
with the tides, the pavilion illustrates the bond and interdependence of the ocean with its
coastal eco system. the architectural form draws on the contours and fluidity of oceanic organisms,
presenting a new paradigm of living architecture.
yeosu is an emerging city, and this piece of architecture can be seen as the vessel to carry
the metaphor of change like an ark to the new world, sending a positive message to future generations,
and offering a platform for people to collaborate and create. the idea is that sustainability
and conservation would run through the design approach. with its open interior,
the pavilion could continued use of the pavilion with the ability to host a range of events even
after the world expo has finished. the design which was developed by antoine damery for PTA,
will promote dialogue and encourage collaboration between asia pacific countries about the
importance of the preservation of oceans and ecosystems.

MAD architects: urban forest
| |
![]() urban forest, chongqing, china all images courtesy of MAD architects MAD architects has sent us images of a new project, urban forest, located in chongqing, china. drawing on the mountainous landscape of the country, the commercial high-rise building, is made up of curved, abstracted shaped floors which have been layered slightly off-center from one another. connected by a core cylindrical structure, each level's interior is protected by full length glass windows with a see-through, wrap around balcony. this provides transparency throughout the building, and makes the floors almost seem as if they are floating on top of one another. the overall design brings together nature and the urban metropolis, with the incorporation of green space and large expansive views of the city. ![]() urban forest, concept and night view ![]() at night ![]() detail ![]() amongst the city skyline ------------------------------------------------------- |
Rainforest by Patrick Nadeau for Boffi
French designer Patrick Nadeau has created an installation for Italian brand Boffi, consisting of hanging domes covered in living plants.
Called Rainforest, the installation comprises a series of Corian frames held together with cable ties.
A type of hanging Spanish moss called Tillandsias usneoïdes, which doesn’t need soil, is draped over these frames.
The domes are suspended from the ceiling and used to light the Boffi product displays.
The installation was displayed during Designer’s Days in Paris, the London Design Festval and Milano Design-in-the-City.
Photographs are by Aurélien Mirofle and Fillioux & Fillioux.
Here’s some more information from Nadeau:
–
This installation is made of tropical plants, the epiphyte one – « Tillandsias usneoïdes » -They are hanging on Corian® structures.
The origin of the tillandsias unsneoïdes comes from rain forests in South America.
The plants are held up by different structures made very simply with thin sticks of Corian (3×12mm section). These ones are naturally bending just in using the flexibility of the material in thin section.
Then they are fiting together with cables tie. It’s a basic technique of manufacturing reminiscent of the way of the gardener’s work.
These is non-soil plants. They are directly fixed on the branchs of trees and they feed themselves only with the air moisture.
This project takes its place in my present research about “plant design”. It offers a different way of use plants as a real architecture’s material.
The Boffi furniture is very minimal, with pure style, essentially composed of elementary volumes in a close relationship with the ground. The installation comes as counterpoint to this aesthetic. It is as light as air, structured by the complex and random geometry of plants.
