Did Balenciaga Launch A Crocs Collabo?
Spanish Fashion House Try To Make Slip-on Shoe Fashionable
To male jumpsuits, sweater vests and shell suits add the croc to the list of historic fashion faux pas. Named after the revolutionary ‘croslite’ resin used in their construction, the slip on sandal felt good enough to ditch good taste. And now Balenciaga are bravely (read ‘foolishly’) trying to bring them into fashion.
The Balenciaga x Crocs collaboration was revealed at the Spanish fashion house’s Spring 2018 Women’s Pret-A-Porter show in Paris. The comeback featured a high-heeled version of the low-end footwear, famous for its ‘croc-off’ imitators, with customizable air-vent uppers (that kids have been already enjoying for some time), where wearers pin badges and tags.
It’s a bold move by Balenciaga’s designer, Demna Gvasalia, although you might remember (but probably don’t, and for good reason) Christopher Kane’s attempt at the same collaboration last year. Whether Gvasalia can succeed in making the kitschy shoes that aren’t even acceptable in a kitchen a success on the runway remains to be seen.
