"Innocent-ed" Photoshoot Tackles Serious Issue
Child Molestation On the Agenda in Nguyen Huynh Phuong An’s Photo Series
As a series of child abuse scandals rocks Vietnam, art is playing its part in raising awareness. Photographer Nguyen Huynh Phuong An has combined with designer Bin Bin and makeup artist Khuong Tran to create this series of images - called Innocent-ed - aimed at portraying the plight of children who continue to fall victim to what Phuong An calls an ‘inhuman disease’.
AnyArena asked her a few questions about the shoot earlier this week.
What’s the story behind "Innocent-ed'?
"Innocent-ed" is a simple play on words. The main characters are two children. One grows up in a loving environment, the other is molested and haunted by memories his whole life. The costumes reflect both of these respective childhoods and the actors 'playing' them in this case have both recently appeared in the movie 'Em Chua 18'
What inspired this project?
Stories published in the media recently, as well as our contact with the victims themselves. These are heart-breaking outcomes, as a large percentage of children who are molested will either commit suicide or lead unhappy lives.
What do you want people to feel when they see these images?
The pain and suffering that children go through. We want to emphasize the impact it has on them and the phobias they carry. We also want to make it clear that we condemn child molestation and call for the protection of children. We hope that people’s awareness will improve and that they will also raise their voices about it.
How will you continue to raise awareness of this issue?
Through all of our various art pursuits. Ultimately we hope that it will help protect innocent children against the current surge if this inhuman disease.
