Nirvana’s Kurt Cobain Is A Style God
Still In Love With Grunge Pioneer’s Shabby Chic Look
The Nirvana lead singer, Kurt Cobain, continues to inspire. The band formed in 1987 and released their first album, Bleach, two years later.
But it was the apathetic anthem ‘Smells like teen spirit’ from ’91 album Nevermind that took the band mainstream. The loud-quiet-loud song formula added to Cobain’s no-fucks-given nihilism meant the singer’s influence extended far beyond emo kids wanting to form bands.
Besides the music, Cobain, who would have been 50 this year, was famous for his thrift-store chic clothing style — baggy sweaters and beat-up Converse. And you can still see his style legacy in high fashion today.
The oversized-everything look’s been adopted by everyone including our own Tom Trandt and his Môi Điên Studio. Then there’s the ripped Levis, a style Kanye stepped out in at last year’s Met Ball. And although he wasn’t the first to cross over, Cobain slipping into a flower-print dress was copied by rapper Young Thug for the cover of his mesmerizing 2016 mixtape, Jeffrey, while manifesting in gender-fluid catwalk shows from New York to Milan.
It might be time to dig out that moth-eaten sweater and that dilapidated denim.
