7 Things To Do In Saigon This May
OMG it’s already May, best enjoy it - here’s how.
2017 rolls on unabated. One minute you’re waking up to a brand new year, the next you’re nearly halfway through it! It’s ok though, if you’ve been holed up in your man or woman cave waiting for the right time to explode onto the social scene, this month could well be it.
With the likes of Steve Angello and Fedde Le Grande arriving as early as this weekend to get the party started, a Color Me Run to attend and Classical Music Dinners to raise the bar, you may have timed your ‘run’ just right. Here’s our selection of not to be missed events for the rest of May.
Ravolution Music Festival 2017 @ Sala City
Bringing a slice of Coachella to Vietnam and presented by Jetstar, this two-day event should get you flying high. Featuring some huge names in EDM - hello Steve Angello and Fedde Le Grande - the event also has the likes of Son Tung M-TP and Tien Tien on the lineup. Awesome!
Where: 10 Mai Chi Tho, Thu Thiem, D.2
Why: It’s an electronic musical mash-up the likes of which we rarely see in Vietnam.
When: 12-13 May

'Echoing Scars' by Thierry Bernard-Gotteland @ Galerie Quynh
Known for visceral, defiant works that deliberate on the metaphysical, Bernard Gottland examines the universal and the individual in this exhibition as well as the dichotomy of man’s free will and the rules of nature. Deep. Dividing the gallery space into light and dark, his work will question the futility of ideological dreams of technicolour glory. A must see.
Where: Level 2, 151/3 Dong Khoi, D.1
Why: Know your disruptors.
When: 13 May - 2 June
My Story - Larria, Oumi, IVY @ La Canalla
Venture into the outer space of the avant-garde sounds of talented Saigon DJs Ivy Phi, Oumi, and Larria at hip hangout La Canalla. Talk a walk though their musical journeys and hear what brought them to their love affair with the decks they dominate on a nightly ‘basses’.
Enjoy as much craft beer as you can with American BBQ for company. Sound good? Add live music and entertainment from bands like The Lost Art, Wanderlusters, Xanhstorm and then throw in pole-dancing from Fox Kieu Ngo and you’ve got yourself a nice little Saturday thank you very much.
Where: 628C Xa Lo Ha Noi, An Phu Ward, D.2
Why: Beer. BBQ. Pole-dancing. We don’t get to say that in one sentence very often.
When: Sat, 20 May
Classical music, visual arts and fine dining in a heritage building in the heart of Saigon. Curated by Saigon Classical, a retrospective exhibition of Vo Tran Chau’s ‘Lingering at the Peculiar Pavilion’ will accompany a six-course dinner and music by performers Pham Dinh Minh (violin), Vo Le Minh Thu (cello), Nguyen Lu Hiep (piano) and Dang Tri Dung (piano). We’re already thinking about encores.

Browse an eclectic range of crafty goods made by the person selling it! Embrace your inner hippie while you choose between fabrics, accessories, jewellery and a range of cool trinkets by the talented people of Saigon. Pick up a gift for your love or discover that perfect item for a rainy day.
If you can’t enjoy the Color Me Run, please check your pulse. In fact that’s the name of the company that brings it to us each year so it’s probably appropriate. The ‘CMR’ is basically a five kilometer fun run in the city where you end up covered in paint with your best mates and a free concert at the end of it. Highly recommended.
Where: Sala City, Dai Quang Minh, D.2
Why: At the very least you need one of those crazy photos on your feed!
When: Sat, 27 May
