Apple Releases 'Planet Of The Apps' Trailer
First original content for Apple Music Subscribers
Is this the 'Dragon’s Den' for Apps? It looks like it and sounds like it, but wait, there’s an element of ‘The Voice’ in their too?
Using celebrity coaches Gwyneth Paltrow, Jessica Alba, will.i.am, and Gary Vaynerchuck - all big names in the social space these days, Apple have created ‘Planet of The Apps’, their first of two original shows made for their subscription channel Apple Music. The other is Carpool Karaoke: The Series, based on James Corden's popular television segment / You Tube phenomena where he sings in cars with celebrities.
'Planet of the Apps' is a reality contest where young app developers pitch to the celebrity panel and if chosen, get the chance to make a case to a team of venture capitalists from Lightspeed Venture Partners, with millions of dollars up for grabs. To create tension and add credibility, tech luminaries show up as consultants, contestants get grilled and ideas arerejected outright. App developers are pitched as the 'new rockstars' and the trailer also amps up the drama between the celebs, who argue over their potential charges.
Will it be good? Will it make app development sexy? We're not sure. If it does, it’ll be big for Apple, who are looking to compete with the Netflix's and Amazon’s of this world, by making more original content. Even with money no object, based on the level of celebrity they've invested in, you'd have to say they're hoping for a banker with this one. Let's see if they get it.
