Bring Back The Motorola Rainbow Mobile Phone
The StarTAC Rainbow Is Our Kind Of Low-Tech Gadget
Amidst incessant talk about the next iPhone or Samsung’s latest innovation there is an occasional ray of light. Or in this case a full-blown rainbow. That rainbow is the Motorola StarTAC ‘Rainbow’ — a phone so fun it will probably start going out without you.
The StarTAC was a clamshell model (you know the kind that hinges in the middle and folds up neatly) launched way back in ‘96. It was one of the first phones to bring in the vibrate call alert as a ringtone alternative, and was remade repeatedly, like any self-respecting superphone, with a variety of technological tweaks. Understandably, it was heralded as one of ‘the 50 greatest gadgets of the past 50 years’ by PC World.
The French firm Lekki, who have been dedicated to reinventing digital products from the ‘90s, started to remake the StarTAC in 2010 but have since taken a break. Even Lekki never got as far as a reinvention of our favourite in the StarTAC line, the ‘Rainbow’.
Let the movement to reinstate the ‘Rainbow’ start here.
