SEGA Forever Brings Classic Games To Your Phone
Iconic Japanese gamer revives Sonic et al. for a new generation
Pioneers of the gaming world SEGA has launched SEGA Forever, a free mobile app that allows users to play classic 90’s games like Sonic the Hedgehog on their smartphones.
Launched on Wednesday (21 June) SEGA Forever currently has five retro games on offer: Sonic the Hedgehog, Altered Beast, Comix Zone, Kid Chameleon and Phantasy Star II. Many were originally launched on the Japanese firm’s iconic Mega Drive, Saturn and Dreamcast consoles and proved international hits back in the 1990’s and early 2000’s.
The suite is free to download and is available to both IOS and Android users, with ad-free versions available for $1.99. Modern features include online leaderboards, cloud saving and bluetooth controller capabilities, although the games can be played offline.
Speaking to theverge.com, SEGA’s chief marketing officer Mark Evans said he hopes SEGA Forever becomes the ‘Netfix of retro gaming’, with the firm planning to roll out many more of its iconic 20th Century games. He says that new launches will be based on community feedback, with users able to say which game they would like to see next.
