Brit sings Vietnamese hits
Lee Kirby to perform for free across Vietnam.jpg)
Lee Kirby, an Englishman who has become a YouTube sensation for his soulful versions of classic Vietnamese songs, is back to perform in Vietnam this summer. Beginning July 15 in Hanoi, he’ll spend a month traveling and performing songs by composers like Tring Cong Son and Tran Tien for free on buses, in parks, by rice fields, and anywhere else the road takes him. You know, wandering minstrel-style.
Kirby sings more than 20 Vietnamese songs (you can download MP3s on his website ), though he hasn’t quite mastered Vietnamese conversation yet. Still, he gets kudos from Vietnamese audiences, who can’t believe a non-Vietnamese can express so much passion for their musical heritage:
“I recall performing the song ‘Nồng Nàn Hà Nội’ [by Nguyen Duc Cuong] in front of about 600 people,” he says. “I sang the first line of the song acapella, ‘Bước xuống phố sáng tinh mơ.’ The applause and appreciation from the audience meant that my two friends (who played the guitars) and I had to wait for almost ten seconds to continue the song. It was a very special moment.”
