Saigon's New Sweet Sensation
When a place starts getting rave reviews when it has only been open for a matter of days, there’s a good chance it will be pretty special. That is exactly the case with Cakewalk – a hip new café specialising in utterly scrumptious and dangerously addictive cupcakes.
The venture celebrated its grand opening last weekend with a glamorous bash, but its range of delectable cakes won a loyal following of fans during its soft-opening phase and made a special appearance at the recent unveiling of the new Tylho boutique.
Any Arena caught up with Lara and Helena, the friends behind Cakewalk to find out more about Saigon’s latest sweet sensation.
Why cupcakes & why Saigon?
Cupcakes because we love cupcakes and noticed a lack of good cake shops as well as variety in HCMC. We also wanted a stylish hangout spot where you can enjoy coffee and cupcakes. We've been in VN for almost 4 years now and are not planning to leave anytime soon so decided to open a boutique cupcakery together.

Can you see yourself incorporating any Vietnamese culinary influences in your cupcakes?
Yes, we do see ourselves incorporating Vietnamese culinary influences in our cupcakes such as using exotic fruits in our fillings. However, we probably will not go as far as using durian.
Which cupcakes are your personal favorites?
We both love our signature Heavenly Honey ones (Vanilla cake, honey buttercream frosting, topped with toasted almonds). Punchy Peanut Butter, Classy Chocolate, 24 Carrot and Ravishing Red Velvet are among our best sellers and favourites.

Sex in the City-type glamour is popular among cosmopolitan Saigonese women. Are you aiming to tap into this demographic?
We definitely aim to tap into that particular demographic. Just like us, many Saigonese love cupcakes and fashion as well. Our vision is to portray cupcakes as not just for children but also as fashionable treats for adults as well. The face of the shop is actually the two of us and another two of our closest girlfriends so you can see that Sex in the City is some kind of influence!
