Lexie Lee

Dancehall Queen reigns in Vietnam.

Straight out of Stuttgart--by way of L.A. and her native Jamaica--dancehall sensation Lexie Lee mixes sex appeal, socially-conscious lyrics and a mashed-up sound that blends all of her international influences.

It was Saigon’s good luck to hail the rising dancehall queen earlier this month, when she made an appearance at Vasco’s. (Finger point to DJ Jase, whose The Beats: Month of Music series has brought quality acts to town every weekend.)

AnyArena finds out more about the sexy, savvy Lexie Lee.

In three words, describe your music style.
Dancehall - Hip hop – Electropop

How does your Jamaican background influence your musical style?
Growing up in a multi ethnic & multi cultural family in Jamaica is a huge part of who I am and a major contributing factor to the type of artist I have become. Everything I am influences my music including being Jamaican. I often deliver my lyrics in patois, which is the Jamaican dialect. My Jamaican background is also evident in the lyrical content of some of my songs.

What was your latest inspiration?
Strong, determined women who know what they want & work their asses off to materialize their vision.

What music are you listening to at the moment?
The Pixies old albums, Kanye West, TI, Crookers, Jahcoozi & whatever else strikes my fancy. Definitely a whole lot of hip hop, pop & electronica.

What did you want to be when you were growing up?
I've always wanted to be a lawyer & a writer. I've fulfilled the writing part through my music & I'm still working on the lawyer part.

What would you would like to be reborn as?
Myself!

What is one thing you can’t leave home without?
My MAC shea butter chapstick

Did you have time to explore HCMC, do anything touristy?
I definitely had some time to poke around thanks to Jase, the promoter. He did a great job showing us around. And while poking, I did some things I never thought I'd do in my lifetime like drink cobra snake blood & chase it with a shot of gall bladder mixed with vodka! We were also served a three course meal made from the cobra snake. That was a crazy experience that I'll definitely never forget. I would have liked to spend some more time to absorb the people, culture, & search for the perfect bowl of rare steak PHO but there's always next time.

Best & worst experience In HCMC?
The best part about the time I spent in HCMC was being able to experience another country; a different culture. The worst part was that big ball of slimy cobra snake entrails that I unknowingly put into my mouth & the popo (police) locking off the dance in the middle of my set.

What aspect of HCMC do you think left the strongest impression?
I was fascinated by the intertwined nests of power lines. Ive never seen anything like that before. Got some great shots of it. The traffic is also crazy & all the people on mopeds & motor bikes. That was a nice snapshot of everyday life in HCMC. I even saw an entire family of 4 riding on one moped; mother, father, & 2 girls. Gotta give it up to them. Those riders have mad skills!

Make sure you all head to the final chapter of the "Month Of Music" featuring DRIP, A.L.F, CALIPH8 and DJ JASE. Saturday the 30th @ Vasco's.
