Vans in VietnamClassic California sneakers arrive in Vietnam
On March 16, 1966 in Anaheim California, Paul Van Doren sold his first pair of sneakers, a low-cut lace-up style with thick rubber soles called the “Authentic.”
More than forty years later, Vans, with their California-cool vibe, have arrived in HCM City. In April, the shoe company opened its first store in Vietnam, on Nguyễn Trãi in District 1.
We love the sneakers for their retro feel and hint of skateboard style. Back in the 1970s, skaters attracted by Vans’ rugged make-up and sticky sole made the shoe a hit. Sean Penn brought the sneakers to mainstream audiences when he wore a slip-on pair in “Fast Times at Ridgement High,” a classic teen movie from 1982.
Vans still stays close to its skate and BMX roots, sponsoring skate, BMX, surfing and skiing competitions around the world. And, though the company has expanded its line to include more high-performance skate and BMX shoes, the “Authentic” is still being sold today.
