Interview: DJ KimKat
Model-mentors back in town for the BUDJs final
Kimberly Lee and Katerina Nova might be the hottest musical happening since Justin and Britney stepped out in those all-denim outfits.
And just like their names DJ KimKat have been inseparable since 2007 when, straight out of LA’s Scratch Academy, they decided to join forces and make some waves in the world of music.
They’re back here as mentors to the BUDJs - who they’ve slung protective arms around across the 18-event tour - and to add a bit of their LA shine to the Cargo-held final.

Kim: We’ve been here so many times we lost count.
Kat: LA’s home, but this is our second home.
So as regular visitors tell me the three things you look forward to most when you’re back here?
Kim: Everything. Noodles. Snails. And spas. Massages.
Kat: And hotels with good beds, so I can sleep.
How does DJing change you?
Kim: I feel like when I’m onstage I’m a different person. I play a character. The image we portray is wild and crazy.

Right, I remember you grabbing the mike and jumping on the table at last week’s semi-finals, Kat.
Kim: But when we’re done I go home, and I want to be a completely boring person. I don’t even want to talk to people.
If you had a DJ battle against each other, who would be better at what?
Kat: That’s easy. Kim would be more creative. I’d be the wild child.
Kim: A wild child that’s been locked up forever. Haha.
You have an EP coming out, and a big single. What would you like the reviews to say?
Kim: I want people to be able to relate to the lyrics. Everything we write about is authentic - what we’ve been through.
Kat: And it’s about love.
If you could interview each other, and ask one question, what would you ask?
Kat: We know everything about each other by now.
So, are there any annoying habits you’d like to cure the other one of?
Kim: We see each other so much. We have separate hotel rooms! It’s important to have space.
Kat: I’m OK. She’s the grumpy one! I don’t believe in space. What’s space!? Haha.
If your suitcase got lost at the airport, what’s the one thing you’d be most upset at losing?
Kat: You learn to bring all your valuables with you in your carry-on.
Kim: And I bring one pair of underwear with me!
Kat: Haha. I do too!
So you’re French-Vietnamese, Kim, and you’re Russian, Kat. How does that make you who you are?
Kim: I was born and raised in the US but I feel more connected to here. Speaking Vietnamese helps.

And together you’re KimKat. Short for Kimberly and Katerina. We figured if you use the ends of your names instead of the first parts, you’d be BerlyRina. Which do you prefer?
Kim: Haha. I would say….KimKat. Yours sounds like ballerina! It’s a little girly.
Kat: Yes, we’re too tomboyish.
There’s a famous chocolate bar called a KitKat. Have you ever thought about a link up?
Kim: That would be great. Kat loves chocolate.
Kat: I always eat KitKats. Let’s do it.
OK. Last one. What song do you wake up singing?
(Kim starts singing a hip hop chorus.)
Kim: Actually Kat’s into hip hop. I think she going to be a rapper after all this.
Kat: I can rap....in Russian!
(Kat starts rapping in Russian.)
