The New Alessandro Michele x Björk Music Video
Icelandic Singer And Gucci Creative Director Collaborate On The ‘Gate’
We just discovered Gucci’s Alessandro Michele is the creative director of Björk’s video for new song ‘Gate’ — a first taste of her new album Utopia that’s due out in November.
Now, we’ve been obsessing over the label a lot lately, as with the meme-generating super-brand’s new keeping-it-real Roman rhapsody Cruise 2018 campaign. And we don’t want to risk a restraining order from the Michele, their creative mastermind. But this team up is irresistible. Especially as recent reports from Japan’s Fuji rock festival, held over the last weekend of July, had it that the Icelandic singer was wearing a coffee filter on her head.
While we can’t confirm that, we can confirm that the dress Michele designed that Björk wears in the MV took a colossal 550 hours to construct. As you watch the video, you’ll start to understand where the time went. That CGI-ed glitter wasn’t added in post at all, but comes from the obsessive details in the design — ‘pleated iridescent PVC, PVC strips, and Lurex organza’ (as Vogue describes it).
The sparse stripped-back new track on which Björk sings “my healed chest-wound transformed into a gate” contrasts sharply with her shimmering futuristic dress on what, she told Dazed recently, is "essentially a love song, but I say ‘love’ in a more transcendent way... It’s about rediscovering love – but in a spiritual way, for lack of a better word.” It’s co-produced by British-based Venezuelan electronic artist Arca, and Texan instrumental grime head, Rabit.
So we’re risking Michele’s wrath to bring you the video, shot by Björk’s regular collaborator Andrew Thomas Huang, in full. See for yourselves below.
